Our Mission is to bring and share hope to the slums and streets.

On average, 80% of those living in the slums or on the streets of Rio de Janeiro suffer from life controlling problems such as drug and/or alcohol abuse and sexual exploitation or abuse.

Prevention and education

Solving life controlling problems starts with preventing these problems from occurring in the first place. We use printed and digital media to educate children on the risks of drugs, alcohol and other life controlling problems.

Sports against drugs

In addition to connecting with children and youth, sports are a perfect way to start conversations.
The moments before, during, and after a game are easy opportunities to talk about the risk of addictions.

Skills & crafts

We offer skill and craft training for anybody wanting a fresh start. Learning these skills opens doors to employment and acts as a preventive and curative medicine
against addiction.

Small groups

We use small groups to establish indepth relationships where people feel at home and encouraged. Sharing lunch and dinner together forges trust-filled relationships where personal battles can be shared, discussed, and prayed
over.

Rehab programs

In some cases it is better, or necessary, to admit people into a rehab program with an intensive recovery program. Most rehabs offer a 9 month to 12 month program, with personal, spiritual, medical, and socio-medical care.

Outreach

We will frequently have teams entering into the slums/streets of Rio de Janeiro, where they’ll meet addicts as well as those in drug cartels. We will spread the Word of Hope as well as invite them to one of our solution programs.

Our work

Life controlling problems affect more than just the addicted. They affect family, friends – even whole communities. In Rio de Janeiro the entire community suffers from the consequences of addiction. Along with drug and alcohol abuse come sexual abuse and high levels of crime. One major hurdle we face are the heavily armed drug cartels that control many of the more than 1000 slums of Rio de Janeiro.

Street outreach

We frequently try reach out to those living on the streets of Rio who are suffering from severe addictions. It’s a complex and difficult task since many have been hardened by life on the street.

Gangs

Most slums in Rio de Janeiro are controlled by drug gangs. Three gangs currently control different areas of the city. Shootings happen daily, causing fatalities and injuries to gang members, police, and innocent bystanders.

Prison

We work alongside prisons to offer care and support to the inmate’s families. Teen Challenge Rio not only guides ex-cons into a new life outside prison walls – a life without drugs and crime – but also helps them find employment.

Rehab program

Some people require an intensive 9-month rehabilitation program to overcome their addiction. Teen Challenge Rio is part of the Teen Challenge Brasil network. When needed, we can send people to any one of the Teen Challenge rehab locations. In time we hope to be able to open a rehab center ourselves.

Living free

Living Free is a non-profit Christian ministry using small groups to focus on helping people prevent and overcome life-controlling issues. The materials are biblically-based and Christ-centered, Teen Challenge Rio de Janeiro regularly hosts small groups specific to men and women, as well as mixed and geared towards youth.

Prevention

Teen Challenge Rio de Janeiro uses a variety of activities to raise awareness among children and young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Through sports programs and special meetings, youth are carried along and made aware of the consequences of addictions and abuse.
